Guru Purnima is the day to honor and express gratitude to our gurus and teachers. It is also the birthday of Sage Veda Vyasa, a great guru himself. It falls on full moon day in the month of Ashada (July-August). During this time, it is believed that all Gurus who are in their heavenly abode come down to earth. Their energy is accessed by living Gurus who transmit it to their students. Guru Purnima is celebrated with great fervor in India as it is the land of many great Gurus and revered yogis. They eagerly anticipate the night of Guru Purnima to recharge their spirituality.
Guru Purnima Celebration
Guru Purnima is believed to have the potential to transform one’s destiny. On this day, yogis and siddhas make use of the Guru archetype mantra to fortify their connection with the Guru thereby tapping into their wisdom, power and miracles.
Guru Purnima 2019 was the day Adi Guru, or the first Guru appeared. More than 15,000 years ago, a yogi suddenly appeared in the Himalayas. Nobody knew where he came from. His extraordinary presence lured people to him, but he sat still, showing no signs of life, except for tears of ecstasy that occasionally rolled down his face. After a while, everyone, except seven men, left the place. As soon as he opened his eyes, they begged him to share what he knew. He ignored them but they persevered. Finally, he shared with them some simple, preparatory measures and closed his eyes again. The seven men prepared accordingly. After 84 years, on the summer solstice (the advent of Dakshinayana), the yogi deigned to glance at them. He found that they had turned into shining receptacles. When the next full moon day arrived, the yogi turned south and began teaching the seven men. Thus, the Adiyogi became the Adi Guru. Adiyogi taught them the mechanics of life for several years. The seven disciples came to be known as the Sapta Rishis and disseminated this knowledge all over the world. In the yogic tradition, Guru Purnima Celebration is considered sacred because the Adiyogi revealed that conscious evolution of a human being was possible. He taught the Sapta Rishis seven different aspects of yoga which laid the foundation for the seven basic forms of yoga.
Guru Purnima Festival 2019
Guru Purnima Festival 2019 is the most auspicious day to practice Yoga and Meditation. It is more of a spiritual festival and is not marked by pomp and show. The most important things that people do on this day include honoring the spiritual masters and academic gurus. They express gratitude to them for sharing their wisdom and enlightening them. They also thank their school and college teachers apart from remembering past teachers and spiritual gurus. Hindu spiritual gurus and yogis observe it by worshipping their gurus and sharing their wisdom.
